Tax Resources For Military Members and Their Families

The IRS provides many resources to help military members, veterans, and their families file their taxes. Military filing can be complicated, so there is help out there. If you need tax help from a local expert contact us today.

Here is a list of some helpful resources.

  • There is a section on irs.gov that will have information for military members.
  • The members can now find the service rules, and members can access them over email.
  • The military status will have an impact on the eligibility for some tax benefits. A taxpayer can determine if they are eligible for these benefits by checking out irs.gov and clicking on military tax benefits. Some people that qualify will be people belonging to the Armed Forces, service personnel, and support organizations.
  • There are some specific rules for those that have served in combat zones. There is more information available on the Tax Exclusion for Combat Service found on irs.gov. There are also some EITC rules. If any of these rules apply, a person can get a larger refund.
  • Armed Forces Guide comprehensive publication for members of the military will include the following information:
    * Special rules for those serving abroad, including extensions
    * Any moving expenses that were not reimbursed
    * Any travel expenses that have not been reimbursed
  • Veterans and current military members can e file their taxes on MilTax. This service is free to use. If they do not qualify for this service, some other federal programs will allow them to efile for free. If they earned less than $72,000 in 2020, they could use any of the IRS free software programs. Any taxpayer, regardless of their income level, can select from free filing forms from irs.gov.
  • Most military posts will offer free tax preparation assistance. This service is operated by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs. A military member can contact their post for more information. There are programs to help veterans across the country. There may be some age or income requirements they need to meet.

Military members and their families can find more information on #IRSTaxTips on social media. They can also find more information on https://go.usa.gov/xAGpq
